From Deming Headlight, March 6, 1979:

"DEATH PENALTY NOTHING NEW IN STATE...Santa Fe (AP) It was about 10 p.m. on May 29, 1892, and Francisco Chaves, a former Santa Fe County sheriff, was walking home near the Guadalupe Chapel churchyard.

As he and a companion, Atilano Gold, crossed the Santa Fe River four shots rang out in rapid succession. Chaves grabbed his chest and cried out, 'Those brutes have killed me.'

The murder prompted great public excitement in Territorial New Mexico. Chaves was an important figure in the Democratic Party and many believed the murder was politically motivated.

A year later, Francisco Gonzales y Borrego, his brother Antonio, Laurino Alarid and Patricio Valencia were convicted and sentenced to death for the crime.

On April 2, 1897, after four years of delays and a 10-day presidential stay of execution the men were hanged from the gallows of the Santa Fe County jail. There were buried in a common grave, without a headstone in Rosario Cemetery."

Additionally, it appears that Atilano was tried for aiding and abetting the murderers. The Bloom Archives shows the following in its index: "Terr. Vs Atilano Gold; aiding and abetting certain persons to kill and murder Francisco Chaves, See District Court Santa Fe County #2771."

“Santa Fe, N.M., May 1. - Atilano Gold, who started from Santa Fe Sunday for Galisteo to work as a sheepherder for Antonio Chavez, was found frozen to death near Galisteo last night, having evidently lost his way in Sunday night’s storm.

The remains were brought into Santa Fe today.

Gold was a well known character about town and came of a wealthy New York family.”

Cooper Gold died as a senior in high school. He was an Eagle Scout, very popular, all around American boy. He worked at camp and was a senior red cross lifeguard. He was awarded a West Point appointment. His friends were giving him a going away party at a Missouri lake. He and a friend were in a canoe with 2 girls. The canoe tipped over, the other boy swam away, the 2 girls couldn't swim. Cooper managed to save one. He went back for the other but it appears that she got a death grip on him. They both went under and got tangled in the seaweed and drowned.

Am enjoying our expanded family. My father spoke about his life very little. You know he had a son by his first marriage: Leo Beckman, 13 years my senior, who I believe either died or had Alzymer's in the late 90's. He showed up at our housse when I was 7 and became veery attached to me and continued contact until near the end. He married a New York girl named Lillian and had a daughter aaound the end of the w ar who and a boy just a year older than Brian.

Harry spoke often about his father's cigar factory not a store, although I chased the Santa Fe cigar store Indian all over town. Everyone knew it well and the husband of my best friend and his father photographed it before the War, altho he was never able to locate it for me. The older girls were taken out of school to work (I think, wrappiong or rolling the cigars) when they were 12. But my father refused to do so. He was kicked out of school around that time for throwing spitballs. But trying to get to Santa Fe himself, he ended up in St. Louis with some kind of clothing store while still in his teens.

What really confuses me Who was the grandmother he spoke about so lovingly? She had to live nearby as Harry talked so fondly of her and the fact that when it rained she sent her chauffeur to carry him to school on his shoulders. This had to be prior to 1892. As the first boy he was very doted on. The picture I have of him at about 10, seems to be a parallel picture to one I found in his hotel room where he was lying after a stroke...and looked to me to have been taken at the same time. I couldn't tell if it was his mother, a blonde, or a grandmother. She certainly looked nothing like Lizzie, but did resemble his elderly sisters. Do you know or even suspect who this woman was? Guess you'll be flooded now. B

Mr. Duran is survived by his wife, Josephine Duran of Springer, one son, Nap Duran of Albuquerque, two daughters, Mrs. Abe (Shara) Herrera of Trinidad, Colo., and Mrs. Bill (Grace) Scott of Weaverville, Calif.; by one sister, Mrs. Andrealta Duran of Wyoming; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
