email from Ned Gold Jr 11/12/2005:

Let me clear up a few facts in the geneology about Dad. His actual birth certificate name was Ned "A" Cooper Gold (with the quotes). He never knew the A was in his name until he joined the Navy in the'40's. Hence since I was born before then I was named Ned Cooper Gold, Jr. without the A. Dad died on August 30, 1980 at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver. He had moved to Denver in Feb 1980 from St. Louis (where we had moved in 1956) because my brother Tom, who lived with Dad, had gotten a job in Denver. Tom still lives in Denver. Dad is buried at National Cemetery in SF with my mother who died Sep 3, 1971 in St. Louis County.

Notes for Thomas Robert Gold:

From Ned Gold 11/05:

Uncle Tom was quite successful in life. Very good looking. Big football player type and a really great guy. I liked him and respected him.He became President of Bee Line systems, a

manufacturer of conduit systems headquartered in Highland, IL.His son Thomas Robert Gold who lives in St. Louis, is still a manufacturer's rep for the company. By a very odd coincidence Bee Line was in competition with Van Huffel Tube Corp., for years the premier steel tube manufacturer in the world and located here in Warren. As you will recall, you met me through the VH connection. I met Carolyn VH at St. Louis University in 1961. When I introduced her months later to Uncle Tom, he didn't catch the name but he caught the city and noted that he had competition in Warren. When asked who, he said Van Huffel Tube. It turned out that he knew most of the management including Carolyn's father. Small world.

Uncle Tom never went to college. He played semi-pro football and ran rum and other alcoholic beverages in NM during prohibition. He got tips about where the cops would be because Uncle Tom Delgado, the SF County sheriff after whom he was named, unwittingly would tell him. Dad was very unpleased with his little brother's activities.

Uncle Tom married Odelia Gonzales whose mother was Sec of State of NM. They had three children" Jacgeiline Stroder, wife of Bill Stroder (three children), Sondra Gold, unmarried and Thomas Robert Gold with one natural daughter and adopted twin girls. All live in St. Louis. i just tried to find Tom's email but can't for some reason.

Uncle Tom died 1983 in St. Louis. His funeral was at the catholic church in Highland. He had converted on his death bed.

Subject: The Golds of New York

Dear Cousin Ken:  My nephew, Scott Walters, forwarded to me your recent correspondence stemming from an apparent “hit” on DNA Family Tree.  I am the son of Leo Beckmann and grandson of Harry Greenwald, and believe that I can fill in some blanks.

First, thank you for all your work on assembling the family genealogy in such a comprehensive and scholarly fashion.  While obvious, were it not for you, we (the progeny of the Golds) would remain forever ignorant and never completely know who we are.  What a fantastic job you did!

The hole in the narrative is that Harry Greenwald had a first wife, not mentioned.  Harry married Rae Beckmann sometime in the early 1900’s.  They had one child, Leo, born 3/9/08 in New York City.  Harry and Rae divorced shortly thereafter, Rae resumed her maiden name of Beckmann, and Leo came to be known as Leo Beckmann.  I do not have any court records.  Apparently, some years later Harry married Honey, and had one daughter, Bea [Smollens].

But not only did Harry leave the scene. Rae, also not too charming, and for reasons that are not clear, decided not to raise Leo herself.  She gave Leo as a little boy over to her sister and brother in law, Hanna and Charles Cohn, to raise.  Hanna and Charlie could not have children of their own, and so Aunt Hanna and Uncle Charlie—both lovely people-- thus became Leo’s de facto parents and raised him.   Rae, and Hanna and Charlie, all lived in fairly close proximity in upper Manhattan, and it had to be difficult for Leo to find himself in such a situation.  Harry was fully out of the picture.

Leo tells of a time when, at about age 20, he got on a train to Atlantic City without a stated plan, and without prior notice, presented at the home of Harry, who was then married to Honey and had Bea.  He was welcomed and spent perhaps an overnight there, but to my knowledge never saw Harry again.  As Bea related to you, she and Leo--half brother and sister-- sporadically kept up with one another.  I met Bea for the first time as a teenager, once in NYC, once at her home in NJ.

Leo had a great deal of drive.  He dropped out of school and bought into a family cap front business on Greene Street in Manhattan.  Without training or formal education, he developed and grew that business into one of the biggest textile jobbers specializing in colored felt in the country, called Beckmann, Inc.  Leo made some money and supported both his mother, and his aunt and uncle, who lived in different apartment buildings on upper Broadway.  Leo would take me to visit them.  Leo also supported his wife’s parents.  He rarely spoke of Harry, except to proudly say that he was known as the “Raincoat King.”  I doubt whether he knew of Harry’s siblings, much less his cousins on his father’s side, unless Bea told him. Your exposition of the facts is the first I know that there were siblings.

In 1931, Leo married my mother, Lillian Sadow (1910—1961), in Lynbrook, NY.  They lived well in Manhattan, as Lillian was a legal secretary and ran a law office and herself made a good wage.   They had two children, Barbara and Bruce, and moved to Forest Hills, Queens to raise the family.  Barbara married and had four sons—my nephew Scott among them.  Bruce married had two children, a son and a daughter (the latter, like your mother and her Great Aunt Bea, a psychologist, living in Boulder, CO).

After Lillian died in 1961, Leo moved back to Manhattan and lived at a well known apartment building called The Brevoort (on lower Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village) until his death in 1996, at age 88.  He never remarried, but perhaps like his father had two girlfriends running simultaneously for 20 or 30 years.  At his funeral at Frank Campbell, I asked the rabbi to use the words, “Felt Baron,” as that was how Leo himself sought to establish a connection with his father.

He did not have Alzheimer’s, as suggested by Bea as a possibility, but was experiencing a progressive dementia through his 80’s.  The cause of death was complications from smoke inhalation from a fire in his apartment, where he lived independently.  Like his father and probably grandfather, Leo was a cigar smoker.  The photo of Harry with cigar in hand is not far removed from how Leo looked.

Hope you are coping with the drought.  Let me know if there is anything further that you need.  And thanks again for all your hard work.

Air Force Band Mourns Former Chief Arranger

Posted 7/23/2010

7/23/2010 - July 19, 2010 -- Retired Chief Master Sgt. Floyd Werle, who arranged hundreds of musical numbers for The U.S. Air Force Band and his local parish, passed away in Oakland, Calif., on July 19 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Chief Werle was best known as chief musical arranger for The U.S. Air Force Band. He was handpicked to be part of the Air Force's premier musical organization by then conductor Col. George S. Howard.

"Floyd E .Werle was the heart and soul of The U.S. Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants, and I mourn his loss," said U.S. Air Force Band Conductor Emeritus Col. Arnald Gabriel.

Chief Werle worked extensively with Colonel Gabriel starting in 1964, when the colonel became commander and conductor of the Band. The two embarked on an 18-year creative surge, leading to over 50 original compositions. The Chief retired from the Air Force in 1982, but was continually honored for his contributions.

He joined the Band in 1951, as an arranger for weekly Air Force Radio broadcasts involving the Singing Sergeants and Symphony Orchestra. Over 900 of Chief Werle's compositions spanning a 32-year career are now housed in the "Floyd E. Werle Music Library" in Hangar II on Bolling Air Force Base, Washington D.C. The Library was named in his honor during a ceremony in January 2008.

"I am deeply saddened by the news of Chief Werle's passing. He was a wonderful man, brilliant musician, amazing husband and stellar Chief," said Lt. Col. A. Phillip Waite, commander and conductor of The U.S. Air Force Band. "His

musical genius inspired me on my very first performance as a Second Lieutenant conducting the Singing Sergeants, and continues to amaze me as The U.S. Air Force Concert Band, Singing Sergeants and I prepare to perform his original composition, 'The Story of the Battle Hymn.'"

Chief Werle was born in Billings, Mont., in 1929. He began playing piano at age 5, and continued picking up instruments throughout his childhood. He played in dance bands in the Billings area, always accompanied by a relative since he was under age and taking to the stage. He was a member of several student dance and jazz bands, performing regularly on Billings radio stations. His very first composition, "Buck Rake Boogie" for solo piano, was written early in his high school days.

Following his graduation from Billings High School, Chief Werle enrolled in the University of Michigan's music department. It soon became apparent that his future would be in musical arranging.

In 1950, he joined the 695th Air Force Band at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Mont., as the Korean War broke out. Around that time, Colonel Howard heard the Michigan Band play a medley of songs from "South Pacific," and was so impressed that he asked for the arranger's name. When Colonel Howard was informed that Chief Werle was already in the Air Force, he began scheming to bring the hard-working arranger to D.C.

When he finally joined the premier Air Force band, Chief Werle was quickly named chief arranger and held the title for 30 years. He was also deeply involved in musical worship, composing over 200 hymns while overseeing the musical program at his local Methodist church in Rockville, Md.

In 1999, his wife Violet Rose Lowder Werle, died following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Chief Werle asked to be cremated. His ashes will be placed with Violet's, who is interred at Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville.

Mary Rose Sarah "Sally" Duram and Robert English had the following children:

i.

ROBERTA ANN ENGLISH was born on 06 Jul 1947 in Cody, Wyoming. She died on 24 Jul 2008 in Helena, Montana. She married TOM CARLSON.

Notes for Roberta Ann English:

Roberta Ann "Bertie" English, 61, of Boulder passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008, at St. Peter's Hospital, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

Bertie was born July 6, 1947, in Cody, Wyo., to Robert and Sarah "Sally" English. She was the oldest of eight children. While growing up, Bertie and the family lived in Montana, Wyoming, Maryland, Canada, Oregon and California. She graduated from Laurelwood Academy in Gaston, Ore., in 1965.

She later met and married Tom Carlson in Helena and from that union came three children, Tammi, Tom and Robbi. Soon after, the marriage ended in divorce.

Bertie later met and married Mort Walker while working as a dispatcher for the Montana Highway Patrol.

In 1973, the family moved to northern Virginia, where they stayed until she divorced again in 1982. She returned to Montana with her children and worked multiple jobs to support her family.

Eventually, she began a career with the U.S. Forest Service. After all three of her children graduated from high school in Helena, Bertie accepted transfers within the Forest Service that took her to beautiful country in Gresham and John Day, Ore., Sheridan, Wyo., Helena and White Sulphur Springs. Along the way, she blessed the lives of many friends with her laughter, kindness and giving heart.

An avid Elvis fan and animal lover, Bertie adopted and loved many pets. She always enjoyed the company of her family and friends and their animals. Occasionally she would talk more with the pets than with the people! Even the fish had to have names, and if you didn't name your own she would name it for you.

Bertie enjoyed the company of her friends and family. She was excited to retire in May 2008 so that she could spend more time with her mother, siblings, children and grandchildren. She had many road trips planned. Unfortunately, cancer changed all of that.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert English; stepfather, Skeets Houtchens; and sister, Mary Ellen Houtchens.

Bertie leaves behind her daughter, Tammi (David) Sjoden of Townsend; son, Tom

(Rena) Carlson of Helena; daughter, Robbi (Kelly) Dale of Kremmling, Colo.; and six grandchildren, David Carlson, Courtney Sjoden, Tommy Carlson, Jhaden (Cowan) Dale, Destiny Sjoden and Brandon Dale. FAITH LENORE APRIL (Philip April, Esther2 Gelpstein, Louis Gelpstein1 (Gelbstein),Philip April, Julius April, Isaac April, Joseph April) was born on 21 Oct 1923 in New York, New York. She died on 16 Jan 2015 in Fayetteville, New York. She married Robert Seidenberg in 1944. He was born on 28 Mar 1920 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA. He died on 04 Jul 2010 in Fayetteville, Onondaga, New York, USA.

Notes for Faith Lenore April:

Faith Seidenberg, 91, Dies; Took On McSorley’s, an All-Male Haven

By SAM ROBERTSJAN. 20, 2015

Photo

Faith Seidenberg took on many unpopular causes and clients.

One frigid January night in 1969, Faith Seidenberg vividly recalled a few years later, she and another woman, shivering “as much from fear as from the cold,” boldly swung open the double doors of McSorley’s Old Ale House in Manhattan, which “had withstood for 115 years the entry of female customers.”

“The effect was electrifying,” she remembered. “Bells were rung, the all-male clientele of the bar clapped and stamped, and the waiters whooped it up. The women did not retreat, however, and the noise slowly subsided. Then came the coup de grâce; the women requested service!”

Escorted to the door, they left voluntarily. Then Ms. Seidenberg and the other woman, Karen DeCrow, sued. And on Aug. 10, 1970, after a federal judge issued a landmark ruling in their favor and on the very afternoon that Mayor John V. Lindsay signed legislation barring discrimination in public places on the basis of sex, the manager of McSorley’s invited Barbara Shaum, who owned a leather goods store two doors away, into the tavern as the first female patron admitted under the new law. (Ms. DeCrow went on to become president of the National Organization for Women.)

Photo

Ms. Seidenberg, a lawyer who died at 91 on Friday at her home in Fayetteville, N.Y., never went back. And McSorley’s, after an obsolete kitchen there was transformed into a ladies’ room, largely remains a male redoubt.

Daniel O’Connell-Kirwan, the manager when the change was ordered, would not have been surprised. “Women are more interested in the right to come in than in actually being customers of the place,” he said at the time. “I’ve never seen a woman eat Liederkranz and drink ale.”

But thanks to Ms. Seidenberg, they now could.

And before she retired in 2005 after six decades of defending her clients’ civil rights and civil liberties, she had broken legal ground on other issues as varied as women’s equality in college sports and whether a lawyer’s skirt hemmed five inches above the knee was “excessively short.”

Ms. Seidenberg’s death was confirmed by her daughter Lisa, who said the cause was Parkinson’s disease.

Born Faith Lenore April in Manhattan on Oct. 21, 1923, she attended the Calhoun School and Syracuse University, where she met Robert Seidenberg, whom she married in 1944. Ten years later, she was one of two women in her class when she graduated from Syracuse Law School.

Inspired by perceived injustices in the case of Sacco and Vanzetti, the anarchists convicted of murder in 1920, she became a public defender in Syracuse and was enlisted by William Kunstler, the self-described radical lawyer, in the early 1960s to protect volunteers helping blacks in the South register to vote. Ms. Seidenberg served on the executive board of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Her husband, a psychiatrist and former president of the Greater Syracuse chapter of NOW, died in 2010. Besides her daughter Lisa, she is survived by her daughters Dana and Laurie Seidenberg, and two granddaughters.

Indomitable in her professional and private lives (she became a licensed pilot when she was 64 and flew to the North Pole), Ms. Seidenberg represented a panoply of unpopular causes and clients, including Bruce Dancis, a Cornell student who destroyed his draft card in a protest against the Vietnam War in 1966 (he lost), and Carolyn Peck, an upstate lawyer whose skirt in 1968 “revealed substantially more of the human frame than is customarily displayed in a courtroom” (she won).

In 1992, Ms. Seidenberg successfully represented female ice hockey players at Colgate University in the first case that converted a women’s athletic club to a full-fledged varsity team under Title IX of federal education law, which bars schools that receive federal aid from discriminating on the basis of sex.

But her most famous case involved McSorley’s, the storied bar at 15 East Seventh Street in the East Village, immortalized in New Yorker profiles by Joseph Mitchell, five paintings by the Ashcan School artist John Sloan and in verse by E. E. Cummings (who mysteriously slipped the pronoun “she” into a descriptive 1923 poem that begins, “I was sitting in mcsorley’s”).

In his ruling in the case, Judge Walter R. Mansfield of Federal District Court acknowledged “the occasional preference of men for a haven to which they may retreat from the watchful eye of wives or womanhood in general.”

But since McSorley’s was a public place rather than a private club, the judge ruled, the practice of barring women amounted to unconstitutional discrimination.

“Without suggesting that chivalry is dead, we no longer hold to Shakespeare’s immortal phrase ‘Frailty, thy name is woman,’ ” Judge Mansfield wrote. “Outdated images of bars as dens of coarseness and iniquity and of women as peculiarly delicate and impressionable creatures in need of protection from the rough and tumble of unvarnished humanity will no longer justify sexual separatism.”

Ms. Seidenberg herself conceded back then that “the law of the Creator may have been changed by secular law, but the views of most people concerning women have not.” And Matthew Maher, who was working at McSorley’s when she tried to break the gender barrier in 1969 and is now its proprietor, concurred.

“That was the end of an era,” he said, “but it hasn’t changed McSorley’s.” If anything, he said, publicity over her lawsuit benefited business.

The suit also defined Ms. Seidenberg. “She had many, many cases that changed the law,” her daughter Lisa said, “but she knew she would be remembered for liberating a seedy bar.”

Correction: January 23, 2015

Because of an editing error, an obituary on Wednesday about Faith Seidenberg, a lawyer who sued the Manhattan bar McSorley’s Old Ale House to admit women, misidentified the area of New York in which McSorley’s is located. It is in the East Village, not in Greenwich Village. The error was repeated in an accompanying picture caption, which also, using information from The Associated Press, misstated the date the photograph of McSorley’s was taken. The picture, undated, is believed to be from the 1950s or earlier; it was not taken in 1970.
